Love the idea of constant, cloud based monitoring, but the important sensors are not accurate

Love the idea of constant, cloud based monitoring, but the important sensors are not accurate
Summary: I love the idea of cloud connected, permanent monitoring of indoor air. Unfortunately, the uHoo is a mixed bag. It works great for metrics you probably don't care much about, like temperature and air pressure. It doesn't work for PM2.5, and probably doesn't work for TVOC and CO2. Update 3: After almost a year. Unit still working, but I don't trust some of it's sensors. We are in the middle of major wild fires, orange skies, and outside air has very high values of PM2.5. uHoo claims less than 5µg/m3, even when we open windows for a while. Opening windows has no impact on inside PM2.5, according to uHoo. I ordered an indoor Purple sensor and a handheld device to double check. On the other hand TVOC is maxed out sometimes (it maxes out at 1200µg/m3, it seems). We cannot identify what causes it, it's not triggered by cooking, there is no cleaning. Still trying to identify the source. Other devices disagree on PM2.5 count. Outside 200 AQI, inside 35 AQI, if you open the windows inside PM2.5 should go up. Not on uHoo, where it stays at around 2-3 µg/m3, the equivalent of maybe 12 AQI. CO2 is flat again at 0. It's hit or miss. TVOC goes up randomly (no cooking, no change in ventilation, no cleaning, etc) Update 2: I moved the device, and three sensors flatlined at the last value they had before the unplug. I waited 48h, but they didn't come back. I thought the sensors may be malfunctioning, but after unplugging/plugging they came back up and are generate plausible data. The device is back to doing exactly what I was looking for. One last open issue is that CO has been zero in every single measurement. Even when the device sits right next to the gas stove. I'll look more into this soon. Update 1: After a few days. The unit is working nicely. Glad I have it. High PM2.5 wasn't unexpected and in line with outside air. When outside air is low, inside is lower. As expected. The high humidity was a surprise and I still wonder why. We are living in desert climate, are heating, and have 50%+ humidity. The high CO2 values are surprising, too (the manual warns that CO2 are high at the beginning, but they are still high after a few days). Anyway, the device does exactly what I expected it to do. Original Review The app is straight forward, but feels outdated. Things you would expect to be swipable, or dragable are not, and overall too many clicks and swipes are needed. E.g. the help for say PM2.5 should be available from the PM2.5 graph, not in a separate section of the app. When you read about PM2.5 in the help section, your data should be one click away. Also, let me change units of a graph at the graph, rather than a few clicks away in a separate settings page. Another example: You can't swipe to the previous hour/day, you have to click on a little arrow to go to a previous page. A modern app would let you drag and zoom an infinite graph. With uHoo you zoom and move the graph through buttons and pull-downs placed above the graph. It's basically 10 year old design, from pre-(multi-)touch screens. It doesn't help that the app looks like an iOS app on Android (e.g. the time picker uses the clumsy iOS design: you can't touch the AM, you have to drag the AM down, etc.). There are other quirks. If you click on an hourly graph, you don't get the last 60 minutes, you get the current hour, and if you click on it at 10:03 am, you get 3 minutes of data. Daily view at 6am gives you 6 hours. There is also no way to see last nights data in one graph. You can see from midnight onwards, or until midnight. All graphs should default to "last 60 minutes" or "last 24h". Shipping was less refined than expected. Unit seal was torn, inside cardboard was torn. No shrink whatsoever. Support says all Amazon units are new, and they don't shrink to reduce plastic. They are aware of the cardboard tearing, and will strengthen it (more cardboard, though). Overall good approach. They could put a note in explaining this … Given that the packaging is no longer used after I unbox, it's really no big deal it was torn. The device was not damaged. After install and sign up, the app crashed instantly. But a bit later things start to work. I guess the app fails without data on the backend. it's been stable since. Important: depending on where you live, factor in the cost of an air purifier that you may buy after you buy this monitor…If purpleair tells you your outside air is bad (high PM2.5), your inside may be bad, too.

I've had my unit for almost a year now, there have been a lot of bugs, but the uHoo team seems to be continually iterating and building upon the app. It's definitely a much stronger, more reliable tool than when I bought it. Probably for the first nine months my NO2 and O3 readings were always off the charts, and I basically learned to ignore them as I still got mostly reliable info from CO2, PM3, and TVOC which were the most critical metrics for me. Eventually, I contacted the team about this bug and it got fixed within a few days. It seemed like a bug that was impacting only my unit. There have been a few other hiccups, but they were random and I've learned to deal with them, but as of the last couple of months I haven't seen many, if any, bugs, and the app has a much better UX.

I'm looking forward to using the IFTTT features soon, it's the feature with the most potential. Right now, IFTTT doesn't seem to be very robust and that could be due to being new to it. I imagine the uHoo team will continue iterating on the ability of the end-user to access the data. Previously I wasn't planning on buying anymore of these, but since the app and reliability have improved, I will be buying another couple of units once I find enough free time to comfortably navigate IFTTT and data exporting to justify the cost.

In about a year or two, I plan on constructing a house and it would be great to see an expansion of this product into something that can be incorporated into said construction and not something merely designed for a table or counter top. Maybe something that looks like a smoke alarm and mounts to the ceiling powered by a lithium battery with the ability to connect to WiFi / LiFi. Also on the wish list would be a sensor for Radon.

I particularly like the multiple sensors and smartphone app’s informative explanation of each sensor’s detection and what to do about it. If you work from home, you’ll find these nine sensors helpful.

Things you should know before you purchase:
    1) It only supports 2.4GHz WiF, and the setup is unnecessarily convoluted; read the instructions and watch the videos on YouTube before you start.
    2) It requires cloud service for no apparent reason.
    3) The smartphone app sends too many repeated alerts to your smartphone with no way to limit the interval. The app is easy to use but not intuitive.
    4) I purchased two units, and one had a defective power supply. Amazon customer service was quick to place It. But, the replacement was cycling power _intermittently_ for three days. The worst part is I couldn't tell why.

    Update Oct-12-2021:
Two devices sitting 25 centimeters apart give very different readings! For example, TVOC=128ppm on one device, and TVOC=1200ppm on the other device!
I went back and forth with their support over email, and after two weeks, the problem was due to the devices losing Wi-Fi connectivity, causing the devices to restart/reboot. As a result of the restarts, the devices cannot calibrate! Which seems absurd, but what do I know. No other IoT device on my network has a connectivity problem, and uHoo wants me to change my Wi-Fi configuration!

I have been patient, but the technology is immature, poorly designed, and frustrating.

I have asthma. My husband, an engineer, has been working tirelessly to make our house air as clean as possible. Filters. Ventilation systems. And more. My symptoms worsened. I thought, unless we know what’s in the air we cannot fix it. I found the uHoo online and ordered it. I looked at competitors, but I liked that the uHoo has more sensors (better chance we could really understand our air) and the uHoo samples every minute (important for checking results when making changes to conditions). I was skeptical but I was desperate.

Within 24 hours of setup (it takes a day to calibrate), the uHoo identified high VOCs. We adjusted our filter systems. No improvement. If we opened the front door, conditions improved. But if we turned on the air exchanger, the VOC reading climbed. I worried that our air ducts had mold. My husband inspected them and they were clean. We finally realized the OUTSIDE air being brought in through the air exchanger was highly polluted. The system sucks in air from the side of the house where our septic system lies. An inspection revealed that the clean-out lids did not have gaskets. Even though there were no odors from the septic system, it was emitting VOCs. My husband installed gaskets. Within a minute, uHoo displayed air quality improvement. Without the uHoo, we would not have suspected the septic system.

Today, all sensors are in the green. Not all of my symptoms are gone (asthma has many triggers), but with the uHoo we can better understand our air quality and make continuous improvements.

P.S. I was not compensated in any way for this review. I am just a happy and grateful customer.

Compared to other devices I have used, I don’t trust it and it cost double.

Reviewed in Canada on September 5, 2023

I am writing this after two years with the unit. It regularly shows TVOC at very high levels that are quite obviously wrong. By that I mean nothing in the house changed, no cooking, etc. But the numbers shoot up and stay extremely high for a long time before coming down. Even opening a window doesn’t reduce them to a reasonably accurate level, which clearly it would if the actual TVOC were high indoors. See photo attached. Humidity reads high by 5% or more, PM2.5 also often reads high. I have compared with multiple other brand units that I had running concurrently. The other units agreed with each other quite closely while this unit can be completely out to lunch. Other times it would agree with the other units. Contacting UHoo resulted in them checking and then resetting the unit remotely. That brought things back to reasonable levels, but it didn’t last. Rebooting didn’t make any difference most times. The unit will randomly come back into the realm of accuracy and then take off again. I cannot rely on it. That is a shame because I bought it specifically for the hourly graphing which is an awesome feature. Too bad the graphs are often wrong.
